Intern – Radar Systems

Intern or GET

Hyderabad, Telangana, India

About

The intern will support the design, integration, and testing of radar and radio communication systems for Red Balloon’s aerostat platforms. The role focuses on enabling secure and reliable Air Band VHF/UHF communication links, radar payload integration, and interoperability with IAF systems for tracking, identification, and data relay.

Description

System Design & Architecture
• Assist in developing end-to-end radar communication architecture for aerostat platforms.
• Support integration of primary and secondary radar modes with IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) capabilities.
• Design and model Air Band VHF and UHF radio systems that enable continuous command, control, and data transmission between aerostat payloads and ground control stations.
• Participate in link-budget calculations, propagation analysis, and spectrum planning for high-altitude operations (2,000–5,000 ft AGL).
Integrated Radar Payload Development
• Support integration of radar systems for tracking, locating, identification, and recording of aerial objects.
• Assist in configuring the display console, radar recorder, and user interface for real-time monitoring and playback.
• Ensure the radar payload is capable of seamless operation in both primary and secondary modes with built-in IFF compatibility.
• Work on establishing data interfaces between the radar payload and ground systems through secure communication channels.
IAF System Integration
• Collaborate with the systems engineering team to ensure radio and radar subsystems comply with IAF interoperability standards.
• Support integration of IFF-linked communications with IAF networks for secure friend-or-foe identification.
• Develop and test data connectivity frameworks to feed radar and radio data directly into IAF systems for situational awareness and mission coordination.
Hardware & Communication Systems
• Assist in the selection and configuration of redundant transceivers with automatic failover for communication reliability.
• Support antenna design, mounting, and testing for dual-band VHF/UHF operations.
• Participate in EMI/EMC testing and ensure compliance with aviation-grade RF safety standards.
Software, Data, and Protocol Development
• Configure radio control software for frequency management, encryption, and automatic gain control.
• Work on data fusion algorithms to merge radar, telemetry, and positional data for efficient ground display.
• Support communication protocol implementation (e.g., TCP/IP, serial, MIL-STD-1553, or custom telemetry buses).
Testing & Field Validation
• Assist in setting up and executing ground-to-air and air-to-ground communication trials.
• Evaluate link stability, radar detection accuracy, and data transmission latency under varying environmental and electromagnetic conditions.
• Participate in aerostat deployment tests to validate radar and communication performance at operational altitudes.
Documentation & Reporting
• Prepare detailed interface control documents (ICDs), block diagrams, and signal flow charts.
• Maintain records of test configurations, calibration parameters, and compliance reports.
• Contribute to technical documentation for IAF integration, regulatory filings, and prototype reviews.

Requirements

Final-year or postgraduate student in Electronics & Communication Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.

Desired

• Understanding of 5G NR and 6G architecture, including RAN, Core, and NTN extensions.
• Familiarity with 3GPP Releases (Rel-17/18), O-RAN standards, and related frameworks.
• Exposure to SDN controllers (e.g., ONOS, Open Daylight) and NFV platforms (e.g., OpenStack, ETSI MANO).
• Experience or coursework in Edge Computing, IoT protocols (MQTT, CoAP, LoRaWAN), and Network Slicing.
• Awareness of Quantum Communications, Photonics, or advanced SoC design concepts is a plus.
• Proficiency in simulation tools such as MATLAB, NS-3, Simulink, or Python-based frameworks.
• Strong analytical, documentation, and presentation skills.
