About
Red Balloon Aerospace is building India’s next-generation high-altitude and near-space platforms, where mechanisms must work the first time, every time. Our systems involve large-scale deployables, release mechanisms, automatic winches, tensioning systems, and mission-critical actuation that operate in harsh environments with zero room for failure. This role sits at the heart of physical engineering excellence, where design meets motion, forces, and real-world constraints. This role prioritizes deep learning, ownership, and exposure to real aerospace-grade hardware. Highly motivated candidates may choose to work for mentorship, responsibility, and the opportunity to design mechanisms that will be deployed in operational systems. High performers will be absorbed into full-time roles as the program scales and subject to performance.
Description
As a Mechanisms Design GET, you will be responsible for the conceptualization, design, prototyping, and validation of mechanical and electromechanical mechanisms used across our stratospheric platforms. These include release mechanisms, deployment systems, launch and recovery hardware, automated winches, and safety-critical actuation systems. You will work from first principles, forces, kinematics, materials, friction, fatigue, redundancy and see your designs go from sketch to prototype to field deployment.
Key responsibilities include:
• Design of release, deployment, separation, and locking mechanisms
• Development of automated winch systems, reels, tensioners, brakes, and clutches
• Mechanisms for launch, retrieval, mooring, and ground handling
• Integration of motors, gearboxes, bearings, cables, springs, dampers, and actuators
• Failure-mode thinking, redundancy design, and safe-state mechanisms
• Prototyping, testing, iteration, and field debugging
• Supporting integration with control electronics and automation logic
Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree (or final-year student) in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Instrumentation, Aerospace Engineering, or related disciplines
• Strong fundamentals in mechanics, machine design, kinematics, dynamics, and strength of materials
• Working knowledge of mechanical CAD (SolidWorks / Fusion 360 / Inventor / CATIA, etc.)
• Comfort working with tools, workshop equipment, and physical hardware
• Ability to think in terms of loads, tolerances, wear, and failure
• High ownership mindset, curiosity, and willingness to build-test-break-fix
Desired
• Experience with mechanism design, robotics, UAVs, automotive systems, or industrial machinery
• Familiarity with cables, winches, pulleys, springs, dampers, gear trains, and braking systems
• Exposure to motors (BLDC, stepper), encoders, limit switches, or load cells
• Basic understanding of automation and interlocks (even at concept level)
• Passion for designing systems that must work in unforgiving environments.
